Electroacoustic reflections. Developed in collaboration with Orchestral Tools, MIRRORS blurs the boundaries between experimental synthesis and large-scale orchestration. It takes synthesized source material and refracts it through the prism of orchestral performance, revealing the symmetry of electroacoustic expression.
Electro-acoustic reflections
MIRRORS is built on the duality of synthetic origins and performative orchestration.
Across 45 meticulously crafted ensemble orchestrations, SLATE + ASH’s sound design meets Orchestral Tools’ classical precision, opening up a new spectrum of timbral possibilities that seamlessly blend across the various instruments.
The expressive symmetry
of MIRRORS is born from the collaboration of two studios: SLATE + ASH’s commitment to experimentalism and Orchestral Tools’ expertise in symphonic sampling.
In Bristol, SLATE + ASH created the synthetic foundation: analogue and digital textures designed to stimulate orchestral performance. These were reimagined by orchestrator Hugh Brant (Thom Yorke, Actress, Mica Levi), who meticulously arranged the material for classical ensemble. In Berlin, Orchestral Tools brought the reimagined scores to life, capturing them in their entirety on the Teldex Scoring Stage, where the space itself became part of the instrument.
A Sound Mirror
The MIRRORS interface is a lens for fusing synthetic textures with their orchestral reflections.
On one side: raw synth. On the other: acoustic response. At the center, a blend node switches focus between the two, shaping new forms: from bowed strings reflecting FM dissonance to brass horns building through modular hiss.
A Performance Prism
Under the direction of producer and composer Yair Elazar Glotman (Mandy, Last and First Men), the sessions treated the orchestra as a synthesizer, transforming each musician’s voice into an oscillating ensemble.
Re-amplified in the same room and recorded through a historic line of vintage Teldex Neumann microphones, the synthetic material merges seamlessly with the orchestra, erasing acoustic boundaries into a single sonic space. Feeding back into the MIRRORS engine, these recordings become raw material, ready to be shaped, refracted, and reimagined.
